Diversity & Debate in Alternative and Complementary Medicine: The 3rd international academic & experiential conference for researchers & practitioners

Background 

Harald is a research professor in psychology. He has done research in evaluating complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), such as homeopathy, acupuncture and spiritual healing, as well as on the methodology of evaluation of CAM. He is currently the co-ordinator of the European Office of the Samueli Institute, president-elect of the International Society for Complementary Medical Research and the editor of the internationally oriented journal 'Research in Complementary Medicine/Forschende Komplementärmedizin,' published by Karger. His more recent research interest is in the connection between spirituality, mindfulness and health, and he has helped develop questionnaires to measure mindfulness and exceptional human experiences.

He is vice-president of the German Society for Transpersonal Psychology and Psychotherapy and developing a postgraduate training program for Transpersonal Psychology/Consciousness Studies.

Background

Dr Volker Scheid has practised Chinese medicine since 1984. He holds a PhD in medical anthropology ( Cambridge ), and has carried out post-doctoral research in the history of medicine at the School of African and Asian Studies ( London ) as a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow. In 2004 he was awarded a DoH Research Capacity Development Grant to carry out research exploring the integration of Chinese medicine treatment strategies for menopausal syndrome into the NHS. In this capacity he holds a senior research fellowship at University of Westminster ’s School of Integrated Medicine . Together with Cinzia Scorzon he founded the European Institute of Oriental Medicine ( Munich ), which seeks to teach Chinese medicine as a plural and open tradition. He has lectured widely in Europe, the US , and Australia .
